What to include

What goes on a business analyst resume.

A BA resume sits between two filters: an ATS keyword scan and a recruiter looking for proof you turned ambiguous business problems into structured requirements with measurable outcomes. Vague duties pass neither. Put these where they’ll be seen — it’s what these templates are built around:

  • The requirements core. Elicitation, BRD/FRD, use cases, user stories, acceptance criteria, and a requirements traceability matrix — the heart of the role, grouped as real ATS keywords.
  • Process & modeling. BPMN, UML, gap analysis, as-is/to-be, UAT, workflow optimization — the proof you can map and improve how the business works.
  • Certifications up front. IIBA (ECBA, CCBA, CBAP, IIBA-AAC) and PMI-PBA in a dedicated block near the top — full name, issuer, and date so both ATS and recruiter catch them fast.
  • Quantified, outcome-first bullets. The hardest part for BAs — tie each activity to a number: “Authored 150+ user stories; cut post-release defects 40%,” “surfaced $3.2M in savings.” Lead with $, %, and volume.

Which specialization? The same base adapts — use Bridge for IT / systems BA, Insight for data / BI, Ledger for financial BA, and Pivotfor agile BA / product owner. Targeting a data analyst role instead? Foreground SQL and analysis — or see our tech resume templates. No experience yet? Lead with skills, projects, and the IIBA ECBA.

Common questions

Business analyst resume FAQ

What skills should I put on a business analyst resume?
Lead with the requirements core — requirements elicitation, BRD/FRD authoring, use cases, and user stories — then process and modeling (BPMN, UML, gap analysis, UAT, a requirements traceability matrix), then tools (SQL, Jira, Confluence, Tableau/Power BI, Visio, advanced Excel). Mirror the exact phrasing from the job description so the ATS registers a match. These templates group those for you.
How do I make my BA resume ATS-friendly?
Use a clean, single-column or simple two-column layout with standard section headings (Experience, Skills, Certifications) and a .docx file — these Word and Google Docs templates are built that way. Weave 25–35 role keywords (Jira, SQL, user stories, BPMN, stakeholder management, UAT) into your summary, skills, and bullets, and avoid text-in-images that parsers garble.
How do I quantify business analyst experience on a resume?
Tie each requirements activity to a measurable outcome. Instead of "gathered requirements," write "Elicited and documented 150+ user stories across 5 business units, reducing post-release defects 40%." Use dollars saved, percent efficiency gained, number of stakeholders aligned, and requirements or stories authored. The metrics band at the top of these templates is there to surface those numbers.
Where do I put certifications like CBAP on a BA resume?
Put your IIBA and PMI credentials — ECBA, CCBA, CBAP, IIBA-AAC, PMI-PBA — in a dedicated Certifications block near the top, with the full name, issuing body, and date. CBAP and PMI-PBA carry weight for senior and consulting roles, so don't bury them at the bottom. Every template here keeps certifications high on the page.
What's the difference between a business analyst and a data analyst resume?
A BA resume emphasizes requirements, stakeholder management, process improvement, and BRD/FRD documentation — translating business needs into solutions. A data analyst resume leans on SQL, Python/R, Tableau/Power BI, and statistical analysis. If you're targeting BA roles, foreground requirements and process work and keep data tooling as supporting evidence — the Insight template balances both.
How is an agile business analyst resume different from a product owner resume?
An agile BA highlights user-story writing, backlog refinement, acceptance criteria, and Scrum ceremonies — the "how." A product owner owns prioritization and product direction — the "what." If your role blended both (common on smaller teams), state it explicitly and quantify backlog and delivery outcomes. The Pivot template is built for that agile BA / PO overlap.
How do I write a business analyst resume with no experience?
Use a hybrid format, lead with a skills summary, and lean on academic or capstone projects, transferable work (stakeholder facilitation, process documentation), and an entry-level cert like the IIBA ECBA. Frame prior roles in BA language — requirements-like tasks, gap analysis, UAT support — and keep it to one page.
