Do I register a jet ski as a boat?
Yes, in nearly every state. Personal watercraft are vessels: they carry a 12-character hull ID like any other boat, they register through the same agency, and they are usually subject to the same numbering and decal rules. The paperwork you are looking for is filed under boats or vessels, not under motorcycles or off-road vehicles.
What should I record besides make and model?
The HIN on the transom, engine displacement, and hours. Hours matter more than model year on a personal watercraft — a six-year-old ski with 60 hours is a different machine than a two-year-old with 300, and recording the number at sale protects both parties if the reading is later disputed.
Is the trailer part of the sale?
Say either way, in writing. Skis are almost always transported on a trailer that has its own title and VIN, and a handshake about whether it was included is exactly the kind of thing people remember differently a month later.
