Snow-belt rules
Sleds register through the state — usually the DNR.
In the snow-belt states where most sleds change hands — Minnesota, Michigan, Wisconsin, New York, Maine — snowmobiles are registered through the state DNR or DMV, and the buyer presents the bill of sale to transfer the registration. Copy the VIN from the tunnel decal or frame stamping, and record miles (or hours on newer gauges).
Most sled sales happen in the off-season, when the machine has been sitting — photos taken the day of sale document the condition the buyer actually saw, covers, cracks, and all. A trailer or spare track included in the deal belongs in the additional-terms box.

What is a snowmobile bill of sale?
A paper record of the transfer.
A snowmobile bill of sale documents the date, price, and condition of the sale, identified by VIN or serial number. Both parties sign, and each keeps a copy for registration.
