Side-by-sides register as off-highway vehicles in most states, same as ATVs — the buyer takes this bill of sale to the DMV or wildlife agency for the OHV sticker. Copy the VIN from the frame plate, note the hour-meter reading, and record the seat count and any roll-cage or belt modifications in the additional-terms box, along with whatever rides along: doors, windshield, winch, light bar, or a trailer with its own VIN.

Is a UTV titled like a car or registered like an ATV?

Both patterns exist, which is why this trips people up. Some states title side-by-sides as motor vehicles, some register them purely as off-highway vehicles, and a growing number allow street-legal conversion with equipment additions. The form is the same everywhere; what changes is which counter you take it to.

What identifies a side-by-side?

A 17-character VIN on current machines, usually on the frame rail below the driver's seat or near the left rear wheel, plus engine displacement. If the machine has a windshield, roof, winch or aftermarket wheels included in the price, list them — UTVs are accessorized more heavily than almost anything else on this list.

Does it matter that it was used on a farm?

It can. Some states offer a reduced-fee or exempt farm-use registration, and machines previously registered that way may need a different application when they change hands into recreational use. Worth checking your state's page rather than assuming the registration transfers as-is.
