Reading the samples

What every good list here has in common.

Look across the thirty-four and the same three habits repeat. Tasks are verbs with an object — send the deck, fix the gate latch, order the roast — so each one can be started without a second decision. Finished tasks stay on the page but visibly finished, greyed and struck through, so the list records progress instead of only debt. And every sheet carries a number — 3 of 5, 40%, 45 minutes — that says how the day, week, or project is actually going.

The sample figures are small on purpose. Each is a hand-checked expectation we re-verify every time a template is rebuilt — in Excel and again after conversion to Google Sheets — so the counts in the pictures are the counts the formulas produce.

Frequently asked questions

What does a good to-do list look like when it's filled in?
Short, specific, and honest about what's done. Look across the 34 examples: every task is a verb phrase someone could start (Send the deck by 3 PM, not Deck), every list has a count or a percent that says how the day is going, and the finished items are visibly finished — greyed out with a line through them. The layouts differ by purpose; the habits are the same.
Are these real lists?
They are our own templates with sample figures we use to verify the formulas — the same numbers documented in each builder so anyone can check that a 3 of 5 count or a 33% is right. The names and tasks are illustrative; the structure and the arithmetic are what real lists look like.
Which example should I copy?
Match the grain. A day's tasks — the daily list or the hourly blocks. A week — the weekly list or the task planner. Work with owners and deadlines — the task list or tracker. A recurring routine — the checklist. Something with a date at the end of it — the wedding or moving lists, which come pre-filled.
Can I download the filled examples?
Download the blank template each example links to; the Excel and Google Sheets versions compute the counts you see here as you type. The pictures show what finished looks like; the templates are how you get there.
